Prof. Passerini and Prof. Simon have been awarded a multiple PI R01 by the NIH, NHLBI entitled “Vascular mimetics to study inflammation and atherosclerosis.”  The overall goal of the project is to identify the mechanisms by which dietary lipoproteins from healthy and metabolic syndrome subjects act as proinflammatory mediators in shifting the balance from healthy to atherogenic endothelium.

July 2007

Prof. Passerini was awarded a two year beginning grant-in-aid from the American Heart Association to study the “Influence of endothelial cell aging on susceptibility to the inflammatory mechanisms of atherogenesis.”  The goal of this project is to examine aging as a risk factor in cardiovascular disease, identifying molecular signatures of aging that may lead to functional impairment of endothelium and measuring age-associated differences in response to in vitro models of inflammatory atherogenesis.
