ACADEMICS: BIOMEDICAL IMAGING
Tracks and Concentrations - Graduate Program

Graduate education in biomedical imaging trains students in the development of novel imaging techniques and instrumentation. Coursework combines the principles of electrical engineering with essential elements from physiology, physics, computer science, mathematics, and molecular and cellular biology to provide a rigorous background for research in industrial and academic environments. Students are encouraged to take advantage of numerous opportunities for internships with industry and national laboratories.

Students obtain the multidisciplinary background necessary to design, build, and evaluate image devices and systems for biomedical applications. Those specializing in design and analysis can obtain courses in imaging physics, adaptive signal processing, and detection, estimation and optimization. Students specializing in detectors and system architecture can choose from courses in control systems, advanced programming, and sensor design and fabrication. The Graduate Program is flexible to allow individual students to work with their advisors at designing a course of study based on the interests and career goals of the student. However, in-depth training on the fundamentals of image science is emphasized for all imaging students, and core BME courses provide a broad, common background for all BME students.
